"Then I stopped by American Rag, where I found an amazing rack of $50 vintage plaid and madras blazers--a funny present for the man in your life. (150 South La Brea, Los Angeles, 323-935-3154)"

American Rag is precisely the sort of store I dream about owning. They sell vintage mixed with designer stuff, but everything is sold under a very cohesive and unified aesthetic.
Funny this - I was in there a few weeks back handling a Brooks University shop blazer in a really lovely blue Madras... The entire lining was shredded and it was still marked $80...
I'll be in LA this winter so may have to take a visit.
Perhaps OT, but what would be recommended to take on my trip? I'll be there in early December. I know LA is completely 180 from east coast "trad", but will it be warm enough to wear a light coat or blazer, or just wear the OCBD, chinos, and surcingle?

American Rag is one of the nicer stores in town. Good mix of styles, there are 2 locations, the LA one on LaBrea and one in Orange County at Fashion Island. The mix of stock is about 60% new, and 40% vintage...or somewhere thereabouts
December in LA is nice, cool enough where you'd need a sweater or jacket daily. But nothing super heavy like you'd wear on E/C. Daytime high is probably in mid 60s on a normal day, lows can get nipply into the low 50s
