Costume is used by interweb people as a negative word, but in fact if you look it up it means nothing more than the mode or dress typical for a time period.

That's true! It's definitely not about fancy dress, and it doesn't even have to be "period costume"... it's just what you wear!

Hower, nowadays there are all these associations...

It's also used much more in the context of women's clothing, but it used to be also a common menswear term.
