Nothing 'youth subcultural', it's the old Cavalry Officer's cut again (pretty much) just with a (very) little more volume.
No on the left, Yes on the right: http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_aUE6s--Cm-A/SvAdwp1pxII/AAAAAAAADeM/WzEJ2YBEj5U/s1600-h/BBAutumn1989c.jpg
^ And the differences between the two are everything.
This haircut haunts my old catalogues & I'll return to all this later. The Pic above is from one of HTJ's old scans. '89.
HTJ again - Are all his Jap catalogues with different covers to my US ones?

It's the old chestnut of how to make 'square' look 'cool' I reckon, which does remain of interest of course. Keep 'em coming, please
Except lose the side flicks or think Terry Wogan or Michael Aspel...
*Ahem*
Those 'side flicks' are called wings, btw.
I'm sure Wogan thinks he's got the suss too. Don't tell me Uncle, I just don't 'get 'it do I?
I bet the guy from The flock of seagulls thought he had the suss too and everyone else just didn't 'get' it.
It was still a shit haircut. Don't give in to the flicks kids!
That gut from the Flock of Seagulls put all his earnings immediately into buying a boat yard in Florida, they were one hit wonders on purpose. He was sussed in every sense of the word.
Except sartorially. And a lot of people feel that's all that matters...

^ Bloody true!

The haircut is a crucial element indeed. Opting for a college-boy can have a bit of a reactionary effect, I mean : spikey hair on a middle aged man who hasn't got that much left anyway ? Fathers sporting some silly teenage haircut because they think they are part of the 'forever young' bigade and all that. A decent haircut is one way of expressing you're way above such nonsense. Well, that's the kinda thought behind it that appeals to me anyway
