Mid-Grey Herringbone Harris Tweed...

I bought a bolt of this in Bath this morning:

http://www.harristweedshop.com/classic-clothes/grey-tweed.jpg

(Mine is just slightly darker)

It was on a stall along with a load of old Black Crombies which smelled strongly of the death of their previous owners...

And yet my Tweed smells oddly strongly of boiled sweets - To be specific, Pear Drops.

Lovely!

I need to measure it up, but I feel a project coming on.

What would you do?

I'd have it made into something like a tweed version of Barbour's international jacket.

Hmmmmm - I hadn't thought of that kind of thing - Many thanks.

I wonder if I could contrive a City 'Field Coat'?

Urban Poacher style!

... Or a PeaCoat?

I seem to have miles of this stuff for my 40 quid.

The urbanish vibe is what I had in mind.  Some not quite symmetrical pockets, standup collar.  That sort of thing.  A bit more funk than a pea coat.  Depending on the weight of the tweed, a quilted lining might be nice.  And a bit of leather trim at the cuffs.

Very "urban fashionista" mr Q, "paying hommage" with a pinch of "irony" and all that. Would be good for the bloggies.

Just make yourself a slacky sack Jim.

It's sometimes good to bet against the form, don't you think 66?  Doesn't it seem rather too easy for a member of this forum to toddle off and get sacked?  There ought to be a slightly higher standard of discernment within the Ivy look than that shown be the average forumite.

I'm all for it. At one point I even played with the idea of corduroy shoes.

I guess it was you using the word "urban" that set all the alarm bells ringing. I've just finished my first beer. I'm better now.

I suspect that we both meant 'Urban' in the old meaning of the word.

And Ivy even at its Tweediest is very urban.

^ Yeah. I guess I just needed a beer. Now I'm having a Laphroig. Cheers.

A tweed Barbour still strikes me as gimmicky though. I even saw tweed on sneakers the other day.

I think a nice, natural-shouldered Chesterfield would be the best use of your tweed, Uncle.

No velvet collar, no ticket pocket. Fly-fronted with swelled seams and sateen lining.

While we have some differences of opinion, it seems as though outerwear is the order of the day.  NSB, for you long coat idea, I'll see your Chesterfield and raise you a raglan sleeved, shirt collared, duster length coat with a self fabric belt.

... A Polo Coat?  (I might even have enough as well...)

How much is on an uncut bolt of Harris? This has been cut, but I suspect not very much. It's pretty much a bale of Tweed. Heavy.

- Daft, I know, but...  Tweed curtains?

Seat covers for the Volkswagen? smile

The field coat thing sounds a bit too Cordings of Picadilly for my taste, I'll go with NSBs coat suggestion. Ivory lining, on no account city red.

This might not be for you, but one day I plan to own a tweed jacket lined with rayon Hawaiian shirt fabric.

^ How's that for mixing seasons. It'll be the ultimate global climate confusion jacket.

If the whole outerwear thing doesn't offer a solution, you could have it made up into a lifetime supply of y-fronts.  Unlined.

The smell of jock straps and musty old tweed.
