Once had a mistress from Tromsø who had a wonderful pitch in her voice.
It's my latest mad theory which I've only just started talking to Jesmond about...
Every colour has a chromatic opposite - Orange & Blue for example - which when placed side by side create a 3rd presence through the dynamic tension between them.

So...
What if the spectrum was all one colour? Like a B&W photo of a rainbow. Shades or tones of the same colour might have their own chromatic opposites which when placed together can create that '3rd presence' by the way in which they work both together and also against each other.
Interesting theory?
So, if the spectrum was, say, entirely made up of the colour Brown from the palest Fawn to the darkest shade where would the chromatic opposites fall within that spectrum? Only they wouldn't be chromatic they would be tonal -
Tonal opposition!
(More to follow, if this is remotely interesting)
Best,
Here's a way in:
Take Grey, just because it's easy -
Grey should go with Grey, right? But Silver Grey and Charcoal Grey lack 'harmony', they don't produce that '3rd presence' in their combination - There are other, better Grey/Grey combinations and those, I believe, are the tonal opposites that I'm looking for.
Either this is insanity or something else.
Help?

The 'complementary' aspect is the 3rd presence.
Orange and black go together well, as does burnt orange and olive drab.
I don't know, I could be colour blind.
What could the third presence be? I've been wearing a burnt orange Sears shirt I purchased from Weejun and it has been in a plastic bag since 1969, it has a presence, maybe the ghost of a young Mod, or its just glad to be worn after 40 years.
This tonal presence malarkey may make more sense after several strong ales. I will revert back later.
It's just the way that one colour plays off another. Chromatic Opposition.
I also happen to think that each colour also plays off itself internally. Tonal Opposition.
... I doubt that any of this is new, but I'm loving it!

A great little web toy for colour combinations.

Not that one needs such a thing.
Patrick That combination looks great. I need to pick up a dark red tie as an option for my pink shirts.
