Bound to be differing opinions. However, surcingle seems very substantial, and essentially Ivy. OTOH, grosgrain often, but not always, comes in colors bordering on the GTH, preppy genre. Too many ribbon striped belts have enough colors that present a challenge with colored polos, etc.
Hard to quantify, but most Ivy stuff seems very substantial, designed to last for years. Surcingle seems sturdy, grosgrain ribbon belts come across as a bit fragile.
Finally, grosgrain ribbon belts are often a style worn in the US, by young women, affecting the "preppy" persona.
Many here may favor the grosgrain ribbons, and many of our favorite sources, such as OCLS, have a nice selection. They seem easy to pass by, after an admiring glance at the colors.
surcingle on my waist
grosgrain on my wrist

I prefer grosgrain myself. I think it can work well dressed up and worn to the office or with casual attire. I would not wear a grosgrain ribbon belt to the office or with coat and tie.
Of the two, surcingle. However, a grosgrain belt is a little more lightweight compared to cotton web.
I think the whole surcingle and grosgrain issue is completely overblown by a few folks. A big party was recently held for the local police captain or some such thing and all of the local movers and shakers were there. The attendees were typically middle aged to older.
Anyway, a number of pictures were published in the town newspaper and I made a point of taking note of the belts. In all of the pictures there were a total of ten men with belts visible enough to make out the style. I counted 1 surcingle, 2 grosgrain, and 7 leather. The leather appears to be becoming the belt of choice in the United States by men who do know the difference.
I doubt that many are buying the fancy grosgrain sold by J. Press or the surcingle that Brooks Brothers sells. I believe that the forum police are going to just have to eventually accept the fact that the leather belt is here to stay. After all, there was a time when the purists did not all accept the belt at all as being "proper" but that too changed over time.

I just don't see all of the distinctions that some people make. Personally I enjoy seeing a variety of styles rather than everyone walking around looking like clones of each other.

The round one is cooler but the square one is fine.
