Re: THE RULES OF IVY !!

Sounds more like bars than clubs. Besides, if you don't have a monthly bill with detailed daily charges sent to your home to be read during sober hours, how are you supposed to know where you were and what you did the previous month?

Cash is King. Always has been, always will be.

But post-excess paper trails are a blessing.

May everyone have the blessings and the favor of the King.

Re: THE RULES OF IVY !!

Then cash-only for you!

No sense in having good memories spoiled by 18% additions that do nothing to improve them.

As for the New Rules, charge accounts should be optional but not required while credit accounts forbidden. Sort of like the new LibDem-Conservative alliance.

PS
I am aware of the odious practice of adding surcharges, gratuities and all manner of fees on a plain charge account. In fact, I share your disdain for them and the pain they bring as I have put up a membership for sale at an otherwise lovely club over just such practices. Many places send you a straight bill but yes, when a charge account begins to accumulate additions like a credit card from ScrewYew Bank & Loan it's time to start carrying cash again.

Re: THE RULES OF IVY !!

One of my pet peeves is those who add their own tips to my bills. I enjoy tipping and in most cases would have given them more than the amount they steal from me for themselves. They not only spoil my fun, but they do themselves out of a few extra bob.
Paris is the exception to this where, if service is included, then the issue never arises and if it's not then they leave you alone to do what you feel.

I always base my tips on length of skirt or degree of eccentricity - I once tipped a waiter even though he'd spilled my drink just because he said 'Whoops-a-daisy' as he did it. I felt like Noel Coward.

Re: THE RULES OF IVY !!

There are rules - and den dares rools - goddamit!

Rules of convention - or custom - may get written down but are more likely to be handed down and hence are so widely understood that any breach is considered a display of flagrant disregard and despised by others.

The rules of Ivy are rules of culture - not custom - unwritten, and fluid; seldom referred to as 'rules', although talked about.  They are learned by assimilation so that compliance heralds a right of passage.  A breach does not invoke outrage but invites reaffirmation, refinement or moderation of the rule.  Long may it remain so.

As for credit vs charge - no one ever offered me credit without taking a charge for it.  A charge account at bar or club is very different - it is customary (op. cit.) to donate a small token to reflect your gratitude for the account rendered.  Not a rule of Ivy - but not a bad one.
