There are often two groups of people:
1). people who like nice thin soled elegant shoos with a the upper close to the edge of the sole.
2). people who like big double soled shoos with a big wide welt/rand.
Some fellows like both.
Why are you a fan of the fat ones? lt's often an underdog shoo compared with it's dainty coisens...it's the big ugly brute, so....
lf you choose the fat ones, why that choice, is it looks or function?
Unless they're loafers (and even then not thin - thin) I like my shoes to be a substantial buffer between me and the outside world. Never in my life owned a pair of capped toe single soled Oxfords so beloved by my British brethren...
So I'm in group 2) and proud of it.
I like both, but prefer the thick gunboats
why? mostly cuz it reminds me of DMs which I've worn since I was 15 and 25 years later still wear.
Give me a pair of Trickers or Aldens any day, both a slim sleek pair has its place in the closet as well. one needs both to be fully content
I like both.
However, 360 degree welt should be limited to
Plain caps
Long wings
Norwegian split toe.
Alden has a lot of other crap like chukka boats with a 360 welt and it just does not work.
I vaguely remember a disparaging paragraph about 360 welt shoes in 'Bonfire of the Vanities'. It was either that or a Brett Easton Ellis book.
Trickers country styles are not my thing. The brogueing looks heavy-handed like that on cheap shoes. Fine if you are shooting in plus fours but not my cup of tea. Having said that, I have Trickers plain cap cordovan with no broguing and I love them.
Depends on the cut of the trousers/pants. That's the key to displaying shoes in all their glory.
dainty little shoes just feel all wrong, unless with black tie or something. my feet are big in proportion to my body, so maybe im on the wrong path. always liked gunboats though, from a young age.
the opposite goes for gym shoes in my opinion- basketball or any big athletic shoes look like idiotic oversized baby booties to me.
a single sole isnt as comfortable, either.my current imperials feel like gym shoes.
also, i think the combination of sleek little shoes with casual anything doesnt look right(seems like the french kids in my old textbooks were always wearing little pointy shoes with jeans and the like) and i rarely have to wear a suit for anything. i even thought my first pair of imperials were a little too pointed and sleek to wear with casual pants(oddly my current ones are v-cleats and look different, boxier, the shape must've changed slightly a few times even back then). the new imperial kenmores (india) i find dainty looking as well-combo of a more sleek design, more pointed toe, and higher heel compared to any edition of the US made ones. id only wear them with a suit or something.

also, im not certain how they (gunboat wingtips, gunboat smooths) considered an ivy accoutrement (besides john simons selling them). it seems like they were an older style in the US, perhaps, a holdver from the 40s which got rolled in with ivy due to the fact that they lasted forever (or am i completely wrong?)
Also, the following is purely emotional: i just f---ing love the crushing sound of heavy bluchers on a wooden floor! don't you?
have to say, tho, the people who share the same office don't, however! i get some grumpy looks when walking downstaisrs to fetch me prints..
Neat point & one which fits very nicely with history.
I like the fat ones better because you can grab on to something, and "the thicker the cushion the better the pushin'".
Oh hold on...
