They are now unfortunately not the same company ast they were bought out by a corp with rather poor ethics. Hence the massive u.s campus boycott of R.A.
The quality is poor compared to the old sweats.Back when though there stuff was fantastic.
As you pointed out in the opening of your post"The old Russell compared to the current Russell is chalk & cheese. Royce socks are the same."..

Student activism - I remember that. One year they marched against Saddam for mustard gassing the poor Kurds. The next year the very same students and lecturers (polytechnic ones of course) rallied againts the first Gulf war.
When the Amsterdam police arrived beneath that hotel window, that Chet fell/was pushed out of, they reported a dead corpse, approximate age 27. It seems in the moment of death, Chet returned to his Golden Boy prime.
