the club collar

Featured lately on heavily bearded trustafarians in esquire. who makes a casual model, besides j crew? the brooks version looks to be somewhat stiff and formal, heavily lined. is it, in person? ive got an old gant one, which buttons down, unlined collar. only other ones ive seen ive viewed are in the horace archive ( by another manufacturer), and in the cheesy japanese "history of street style"(under the jivy ivy heading). Anyone else have in-the-flesh examples? Know of current possible manufacturers?

Looks good EVT.  I may have to consider a club option with my next BB order.

Re: the club collar

I picked up a Ralph club collar shirt for next to nothin' recently.

It's chambray, kind of dark, almost denim-looking.  I have yet to figure out what to wear it with.  Dark knit tie and cord jacket, maybe?

Re: the club collar

Aw, thanks, Jim!

I've had several made up by Brooks.  Sadly, they ARE quite stiff, though the oldest ones (coming up on 5 years, I'd guess), are beginning to soften up.  Despite and still, I like them and would recommend them.

I have several from Ralph in both oxford and broadcloth.  The oxford cloth has enough heft to make the collars not too flimsy.  The broadcloth, however, IMO, are too soft.  Without a little starch, the points just sort of hang there like fish scales.

Given the relative shortness of the points on a club collar (can we go back to using Brooks's "golf" nomenclature?), I do think you need a bit of "stuff" in it in order to keep it from curling or just dangling (fish scales).  Ralph's oxfords get that aspect almost perfect.  Brooks's, despite the stiffness, will give you their lovely fabric and perfect fit.

Hmmm. Thanks for the input from all of youse, i think i still might need to see about getting this gant reproduced in the pakistani neighborhood to get what i want (buttondown, unlined collar, tapered fit, colors other than blue/white). incidentally, anyone interested, pending pricing?

Brooks does a good job and you can order it in any fabric (not just oxford) as I recall.

Re: the club collar

on the contrary, very helpful. good to know that mtm program does stuff like that. just have little call for more formal shirts at the moment.

Re: the club collar

I've been meaning to get over to Brooks for some custom clubs.  I'd want something like they did for me with the unlined collar on the BD's.

They claim to not have the patterns on the oldest Brooks shirts anymore, which is a pity.  But the BD's they did for me in 'eritage cloth was top clobber.

Now, if we can just get that green again.
