Since their are a fair bit of people from that era on here.
I'm looking for an interview in a newspaper that was about "Smoovies".
The newspaper could've been Mirror or Sun (or even something else) and the subject was a full page interview with a fella from Stepney who said that his mates called each other Smoovies (with a "v" and not "th"). The interview included a full length picture of him with shoulder length hair, a John Wesley Hardy shirt (penny collar), Mohair Trousers with 1/2" turn-ups and Royal Smooths.
It's a long shot, but maybe anyone around here remembers the article? Ultimately I'm looking for a scan/copy of it, but if you have any other information (like the exact newspaper this was in? or the exact year) I would be very grateful.

Sorry no knowledge of the article.
Never heard of the cult either. Was it Stepney specific ?
A full page for something from 40 years ago that was really esoteric ? Maybe he was pulling the journalist's plonker ?
presumably the article was 40 years ago...
if you search for 'smoothie' on here there's quite a few mentions of them
one of the threads:

Suedehead and Smooth might have been used at the same time, smooth might have been later...

Also, it could be of interest that the 'smoovies' label was mentioned in this book :

in relation to what I say above about people wanting to move on after The Who started calling themselves Mods the 'smoovies' tag was used by some of the originals. The story could have been based on certain facts such as this one, who knows ?

I remember this period well. Crombies - snide - and brollies. Then it went a bit chaotic - hair, tank tops, tonik trews, tasselled loafers. 'Orrible.
