Nearly all of the photos in this thread, but particularly the ones from the last week or so, prove to me FNB's assertion that most of the iGents are complety new to dressing up. I almost never see regular folks dressed up as badly as these characters.
The last time any of my cronies wore a tie like that was to the retro-themed spring fling in 1993. since then, we have become extremely conservative and do not generally wear things we find in the garbage. but thats just me, i cant speak for any other people here, or their associated cronies.
There is such a thing as an American check and it goes beyond the obvious Madras.
Obviously there is the tacky end (I have googled Herb T before) and 'the full Cleveland' suggests a style.
There are also checks that US retailers like J Press and Andover shop offer that would not sell in the UK.
Your man has kept the jacket pressed and in good shape so 'third world peasant' is too strong. It just not a check you would see worn in the UK.
In mitigation, an American would not wear the dreadful check jacket, tattersall shirt and pheasant motif tie combination that is the mainstay of English country shops.
^ I know about ska but have never watched 'Ashes to Ashes' or its predecessor.
I can distinguish Herb's favourites from the Andover Shop though.
Some American checks :-

J Press ones might be for sunny climes. Andover shop one just would not sell in the UK.
I have left out Black Watch jackets which some Americans are happy to wear without any wager having been placed beforehand.
