Just taken a stroll down our main street. In the Red Cross Shop, a Burberry shirt: pale blue, 100 per cent cotton, made in France. £3.49.
I didn't buy it. Finger and thumb over the fabric. Good look at the stitching on the collar. Couldn't quite put my finger on it.
Same with books. Has to be the right edition; has to look and smell right.
Deep meaning? Double meaning? Had the shirt been run up in Bangladesh or contained polyester, that would have been that. It met some of the criteria, but still something was amiss.
The name? The connotations?
Provenance, or lack of. Or a sygil that has gone into a Burroughs virus supernova. I think that's the problems with blatant labels, including RL.
Burberry, the name and the connotations are all chav.
