Been discussing this with Hank. We'd love to see a picture. Whatever Bobby Kennedy is wearing in that 58 picture it looks like two-button to me. Three buttons for tennis might have made sense.
I've definitely seen three button Perry shirts, but I'm not sure if they were from the 1970s or 80s, or if they were already an option during our boom years... If Ken Lovegrove says so, I'm sure it's not a myth!
The double stripes at the collar/ sleeves were there, at least in the sixties. FP also sold tennis jackets at the time, but I'm sure that it wasn't such a huge range as today... Those FP shops sell everything from shoes to bags... Diversification can damage the core product, that's a big risk!
The 3 button Fred was around in the late 70s definitely. I had a few as a teenager in my pre-mod, pre-Ivy days. Wouldn't be seen dead in one now. It's another discredited brand, n'est-pas?

Stace - You are a true scholar. Thank you.
Whoops! Yes, he is, I meant to say. Saw some Perry this morning, the vileness of which I could scarcely convey to you in words.
I bought a 3 button brazil colours yellow/green tipped in 1979 from Mr Buy-rite in Berwick St market, so they did exist, although I remember it being unusual even at that time, and much coveted back in Bournemouth amongst other teen modernists.
I can also say mid 80s - Probably 86/87 - I had a couple of newly bought FP 3-button shirts..
