Straightforward Cool: Woody Herman

You can often search in vain in general works on jazz for much sign of Ivy style.  Sometimes because the books were published during the 70s when the fashions were changing.  But guys like Woody tended to stay a tad conservative and restrained, keeping the width of lapels modest, the shirts a little crisp, the watch and watchstrap on the quiet side.  Bit of a contrast to Sun Ra, in fact.  Or even Jimmy Smith.

I was thinking about WH this morning... after having the topics of Ellington, Basie etc. well, not covered, but mentioned... it was due... but I should be working!

You can still buy the Woody Herman Columbia 1945-47 box set on Mosaic.

Of course, not as important as Stan Kenton for nurturing the talent of the West Coast sound.
