Marcello was a big Chet Baker fan and when Baker was in Rome during an extended tour in 1979, Mastroianni went to see him peform everynight.
He later said it was like being transported back into a film by Fellini, such was the adoration of women and men that Baker despite his physical and mental state held a strange mystique over his fans.
What Marcello's requests where, are not recorded.
Chet seemed to show no malice towards the Italian authorities, despite being incacerated for fifteen months, six of them in solidarity confinement. He realised that this was better treatment than what Hawes and Pepper got dished out back in the US.
I'm the first to knock Italy aroud here and I've got certain reasons for this, all subjective and personal.
But, it has to be admitted, that there was a time in the 50's and '60's when Italian style and cinema had it all going on.
