I've always hated this form of headgear, in spite of my allusion here to Lester Young. A lot of jazzmen - like Monk - wore hats and wore them beautifully, artistically, eccentrically... But, once adapted and adopted by white British youth (I emphasise white) they became yet another symbol of prole aggression, like the gingham shirt, the braces, the boots, the snide Crombie. There are some very horrible images indeed. The only hat I can possibly wear is my Stetson tweed cap from 2 Russell Street; nothing else. Anyone manage to pull anything off?
very few 'British Youth' have worn a Pork Pie hat - are you not confusing it with a stingy-brim trilby? (often incorrectly called a Pork Pie hat)
popeye huts? i alway wanted one, after seeing quadrophenia at 18, then the timberlake/boy-band/weaselly LA club dork types all started wearing them, and now theyre in clearance piles at target. probably for the best.
can anyone tell me how to shrink my picture thingy to a normal size? i dont want to eat up our leader's bandwidth.
Do Americans have real pork pies ?
Does Melton Mowbray mean anything over there ?
Grey meat or pink ?
Oh, I thought this was going to be about mingus.
depends on where you go. they arent common or anything. that kind of stuff is more or less readily available at various specialty shops in chicago due to the large irish expat population, along with sausage rolls, puddings, pasties, shepherds pie, rashers, etc. the west indians also have their variant, not that youd call that a "proper" pork pie. but quite good as i recall. northern wisconsin was settled heavily by the welsh (iron mines) and they do a variant of the pasty, which is more or less identical but called a "northern" pasty.
during my milwaukee collegiate phase a store called "Ozpies" opened which sold only australian-styled meat pies. it was near a snooty prep school and they seemed to think that Ozpies would become a hit with the kiddies. i was probably their only customer. i think they were ex mormon missionaries. the sobriety did nothing to discourage the most ridiculous business plan, ever.
do not know of Melton Mowbray. ive seen both colors of pork. i will be sure to take notes and report back, next time i eat one.

Not a fan of the Pork Pie hat, just about everyone I have seen in one looks bad, when I say seen, I mean on the street, the old cats in pics look good, but I think it takes a certain someone to pull off this hat? As a mate of mine put it to another, "who you come as, Boy George?"
I like a well made trilby - a la Mad Men (best instant example), not these lousy Brick Lane East London tatty things, but a sharp one that reflects the cut of the cloth you are wearing. I fancy one for the winter, might have to look to invest.
But, I do love a cold crust pork pie... mmmmmmmmm
