Re: Getting The 'V' Right -

Got to agree with you Uncle-imho the optimum position of the V should fall between the second and third button of a shirt placket- granted there are variances in shirt button placement but if you used a Brooks Brothers OCBD as the ideal shirt to wear with a v-neck sweater -the above statement is an absolute.

Re: Getting The 'V' Right -

call me a dissenter, I like the V to be shallow and hit at the 2nd button on a shirt.  with a buttondown collar i find this way the V follows the same angle and trajectory as my shirt collars and looks nice with that little bit of symmetry and parallel-ity.  but then I like small-ish collar'd shirts so the result may be the same if your shirt has bigger collars, hence needing a deeper V

Re: Getting The 'V' Right -

When I started out the 'V' was very easy to get right.. Then it went too deep in the 80's... Then it went too high...

I've a Westaway sleeveless 'V' on today - Oxford Grey Lambswool with a Blue/White Candy Stripe OCBD, Olive Flat Front Cords, White T., Cordos, etc. A nice, fresh, youthful look, the ol' sleeveless V. IMO.

Any other sleeveless fans?

Best -

Jim.

Top Man!

I like the 'Schoolboy' vibe of the Grey too - So at odds when you wear it with Jeans & tougher bits of kit.

I've got them in a few colours, but wear the Grey, Navy, Burgundy & Dark Green most - Good 'Ivy' colours!

I've a Fawn one & a Black one I've rarely worn for some reason...

Thoughts on the Sleeveless Cardi or 'Sweater Vest'? I'm not so keen on them. They can look a bit too much like you've just come from Make-Up and Wardrobe via Central Casting if you're not careful, IMO. A touch of the Henry Higgins maybe?

Re: Getting The 'V' Right -

exactly that, re. sleeveless cardies. i quite like the henry higgins comparison! thus, wouldn't wear one, a bit too old man (in a wrong way) / fogey perhaps.

as for the sleeveless v's (non buttoned ones), my favourite at the moment is a burgundy one, goes very well with almost any shirt i own, fave shirts to combine w/ it on the half sleeve front are a cream w/ burgundy / teal / navy / baby blue big plaid check dna groove and pale yellow w/ navy / baby blue / lilac plaid check old bennie, to get that good ol' suedehead look! add a pair of dark denims w/ turnups + brogues or bootcut denims without turnups + weejuns or thin-soled black italian penny loafers, with a g9 or a cream short mac ond top, voilá!
damn, i'm already waiting for the spring to come so i can wear these combos again!

as for long sleeves, i also use strong plaids with it most, occasionally a white shirt, too.

i also have bright red, navy, black and very dark burgundy (almost plum) ones but somehow i wear the  lighter / brighter burgundy one most. grey one is one my shopping list, perhaps a dark green one as well. for some reason i don't wear green that much tho'.

Re: Getting The 'V' Right -

I like sweater vests too....but I find myself wearing them strictly with a half sleeve shirt so that at least my visible arms covered in tattoos don't put me too far into the "geography teacher" category. or at least a teacher that will beat his students up, which isnt a bad idea in today's education climate in the USA

I tend to wear a navy one the most.  would love to have a really deep wine/burgundy one if I ever see "the right one".  also have a grey sleeveless cardi vest but something about it I dont like and prefer a true sweater vest

Re: Getting The 'V' Right -

That's the word - Slipover. Sleeveless Pullover was also suggested via PM. 'Sweater Vest' is American - 'Vests' being waistcoats and all that, hence my confusion with the button front & those sleeveless-cardigan-looking things.

Better now. Ta.

Re: Getting The 'V' Right -

Getting the 'V' right is important! I used to like sleeveless Vs but I don't really wear them anymore. I look like a nerd even without one smile . I still have one in burgundy, I'd wear it with a half/short sleeve gingham, denims with turn-ups and heavy shoes if I had to wear it again. I don't ever want to wear a sweater vest!

I used to prefer a V neck to a crew (maybe I still do), a good collar roll looks much better with a V. My current favourite V neck is a thick and heavy cashmere sweater, colour is somewhere between caramel and mustard. I got it for next to nothing, unbelievable since it was deadstock. After getting used to it I can't wear anything itchy such as a shetland big_smile.

Re: Getting The 'V' Right -

Whilst reading this thread-I`m surprised no one has as yet mentioned the wearing of a V-neck sweater over a plain white tshirt-I do this occasionally and think it provides quite a crisp clean alternative to a collared shirt and v-neck sweater combo.

Re: Getting The 'V' Right -

I feel the v of jumpers produced by House of Bruar is perfect, somewhat lower than many of the high streets offerings but I suppose this is why I am willing to pay a little more for the quality items they produce.
