The cheapest ugliest leather I got, is probably some black Florsheim copy of a Sebago classic beefroll bought about 5 or 6 years ago.
Getting them dirty, both walking through mud and dacing on talcum, cleaning with a thick brush and using only the cheapest shoe polish hasn't worked... Last year I really thought about the "Weejun hack" sandpaper thing, but I didn't do it....
