Tweed

I no longer own a tweed jacket.  This 'Irish' shop up the street from where I was staying last week was selling Harris, okay?  Expensive, but some of those Breton shops were trying to dress their male customers like English fly-fishermen, Home Counties Tory voters or whatever you will.  Now, is 'Harris' 'Irish'?  Did I read somewhere on here about a Chinese connection?  All right.  Russell Street once talked about the differences between an English made and an American made tweed jacket.  No problem with that.  I do want another tweed jacket, but very soft and very dark brown and very Donegal.  Trawling through Ebay I see some quite interesting prices for Harris.  Trawling through vintage shops I often see the same prices.  Trawling through charity shops I find I could buy something for around a fiver.  Now, is anyone still excited about Harris?  Is anyone indifferent to Harris or to tweed in general?  I must have handled several dozen examples of Harris during the summer, and the only one I quite liked wasn't my size anyway.  I lost interest and bought Italian wool and cashmere instead.  Who thinks what?

Re: Tweed

I think my brown old Herringbone Brooks is the nicest jacket I own. I think it's time to wear it again. I think I'd wear it even if everyone and their mum would.

Re: Tweed

Utilitarian and bulletproof. I never felt it sat too well with soft American tailoring.

Re: Tweed

I love Harris tweed, preferably herringbone.

Re: Tweed

Harris is alright but can get a bit of a rundown, nerdy look. M&S used to sell Harris until a few years ago.

Donegal is better - a more flexible cloth. I have a couple of Harris and a ventless Donegal bought in Ardara plus another very lightweight Donegal that I suspect was probably a High Street offering.

Also have a Cordings tweed which is another option altogether.

Re: Tweed

For me it is simply THE ivy piece of clothing or cloth, tied for 1st with corduroy.

The other good thing is that you can pull it off easily in a variety of circumstances...dresses up or down nicely in my opinion. Oh I could go on and on... it's a classic but not overdressed look for me really.
