The second-hand trousers I bought in Belcoo

The perils of 'thrifting'.

Says it all really. That is why the only second hand stuff I would go near is jackets/coats

Bottom halves are, yes, probably best avoided.  I make an exception for my Levis chinos, which are one of my best buys at a fiver.  It somehow seems better - from a psychological and olfactory point of view - if jeans, chinos etc. etc. are hung on rails at eye level and not where you have to slip a disc to get anywhere.  My elder daughter - critical of more or less everything to a fault - says all charity shops smell.  She fails to take into consideration the heaps of dirty washing behind her bathroom door.  The Tracy Emin of North Lincolnshire.

his admirable balladry skills aside, what isnt explained is why he bought them in the first place. second-hand pants generally give me the creeps, but theres enough  NOS or close-to-deadstock stuff out there in fabrics, weights, and cuts that are impossible to find outside of boutiques for Fancy Boys. beats paying paul smith or Junya Whattawannabe For Comme Des Petit Et Chic Garcons?  589 dollars or something for an identical pair thats soaked in sweatshop-gunge instead of being worn once and forgotten by a dead man.

This is a fact John Simons has acknowledged, albeit in a slightly oblique fashion.
