^ Yes it is a belter. Proper country music - rather than AOR performed by people in cowboy hats.
It was even a hit in the UK.
country always seemed to be quite popular down south (Essex etc), also Ireland and the Caribbean. i think there is a fair amount of appreciation among music buffs for it, especially since the folk/alt.country boom in recent years. and you give too much importance to Bragg etc - virtually no decent music is seen as 'important' in the UK these days (not sure it ever was?)
fewer people know what the 'Western' part is tho - I'll take Bob Wills and co over bebop any day
Yes, country is popular in Essex. As to admitting to loving 'Wichita Lineman' - which is, I agree, on the poppier end of the spectrum, so what? At Ilford Palais back in the day it was hugely popular - sitting a little uncomfortably alongside the Four Tops, Sam and Dave and Smokey Robinson, however!
A nice, sunny day, with a slight nip in the air.

A dark green silk scarf and vintage Persol Ratti (mid-late 60s apparently, ochre-brown lenses, metal frame) complete the outfit. Longish, French style barnet and a smile, even if it's Monday...:-)
