Re: What are you drinking at the moment ?

I found myself drinking Speciale de Brabant over the last fortnight on my hols, a very nice blond beer. I can't remember getting back to the hotel on the first night but the wife informed me that I fell though the doors and landed on my face in front of the reception desk. Upon returning to the same bar the next night I found all the bar staff knew my name and I was greeted warmly with a "Ciao Simon". Word behind the pumps was I drank 5 liters of it.

I fear I may have made a cock of myself.

^A great shame.

Russian caravan tea for me this morning, blowing a gale outside more end of October than the middle of July. That's okay by me, I've got the Bill Evans Trio on.

Heppie , Lapsang Souchong in a glass can work as a placebo peaty single malt. Try it. You'll get higher than shooey in a weed patch.

Re: What are you drinking at the moment ?

I went to the tea shop yesterday, and have stocked on with Lapsong Souchong, Smokey Earl Grey, Orange Pekoe's of all denominations and first flushes of various sorts.

Enjoying a Blackwood Orange Pekoe this morning from Ceylon, which is no longer a country, except in the tea world.

Still raining outside, been raining for about two weeks now, reminds me of the tropics except its as cold as the end of October. Not to worry, I've got an excellent Satchmo biography 'Pops' on the go by Terry Teachout. Armstrong: there was a cat who had character.

Re: What are you drinking at the moment ?

I must check out some more Satch biographies. Everything I've read shows Satch wasn't concerned about appearing cool at all but saw himself as professional and entertainer. Yet he was cooler and hipper b than it is possible for anyone to be.

Anything read about Armstrong always makes me go back and listen to early Bing Crosby. Sadly underapprciated is bing. It is possible to swing in a cardigan. Doris Day can swing too.

It's raining here too and only around 15C  but I still went out for a 20 k ride working my way back up to bike fit after a bit of surgery. Then back to my gym in the shed.

I was going to go riding yesterday but I mistakenly read the weather for Aberdeen,Scotland where my brother lives and it said 14C , rain and high 50ks winds , so I changed my whole weekend plans. Bugger. And it's summer there and winter here.

Quite possibly the Rolls Royce of builders' tea - Red Label. Probably a bit weak in this Tesco batch though.

Badger Original.  £1.30 from the Co-Op.  Not bad value, as Philip Larkin used to say.

Had a swift pint of 'Clerkenwell beer in Leather Lane at this trendy new establishment yesterday
http://londonist.com/2011/06/london-beer-quest-the-craft-beer-co.php

Reasonably priced though some of their beers are expensive. Barmaid was a bit dopey.

Had a swift lunchtime pint of Woodford Wherry today in The Gunmaker on the other side of the road. Very busy.

Which band is it, Shooey?

More orange pekoe for me this morning whilst checking out a couple of CD's of Bud Shank.

Haven't been able to check out Fritz's Krombacher recommendation, but in addition to Bavaria's alcohol free beer offerings, I have now checked out Amstel's, Grolsch's and Hoegarden's expressions. And Bavaria and Hoegarden are in the lead by a furlong.

Also Carl Jung's alcohol free red wine is pretty good, the white is not so good.

Re: What are you drinking at the moment ?

Is it an archetypal wine?

Many times I've no particular interest in the alcohol. I'm more than happy to drink a good tasting non alcoholic beer or wine. In fact I'd love it.

Look forward to your final list and tastings hepcat.

Re: What are you drinking at the moment ?

Its a simple table wine with no grape type stated, although there's some kind of cabernet involved. They also do a Merlot and an American wineyard, Ariel do a cabernet sauvignon which I've ordered.

I sampled the Bitburger non-alcoholic beer at the local windmill cafe yesterday afternoon and that was by far the best non-alcoholic beer I've drank so far. Seriously crisp and refreshing with no alcohol induced sleepiness and fuzziness. A real winner.

I see that Fosters do a non-alcoholic beer, I would like to taste that. I was big fan of Fosters back in 1987/88 before the brewchem breweries took over and turned the major lager brands into boring bland dish water with a nasty formaldhyde after taste.

Re: What are you drinking at the moment ?

Australian wallabies are eating opium poppies and creating crop circles as they hop around “as high as a kite”, a government official has said.

Lara Giddings, the attorney general for the island state of Tasmania, said the kangaroo-like marsupials were getting into poppy fields grown for medicine. She was reporting to a parliamentary hearing on security for poppy crops.

Australia supplies about 50% of the world’s legally-grown opium used to make morphine and other painkillers.

“The one interesting bit that I found recently in one of my briefs on the poppy industry was that we have a problem with wallabies entering poppy fields, getting as high as a kite and going around in circles,” Lara Giddings told the hearing.

“Then they crash,” she added. “We see crop circles in the poppy industry from wallabies that are high.”

Rick Rockliff, a spokesman for poppy producer Tasmanian Alkaloids, said the wallaby incursions were not very common, but other animals had also been spotted in the poppy fields acting unusually.

“There have been many stories about sheep that have eaten some of the poppies after harvesting and they all walk around in circles,” he added.
