Re: What are you drinking at the moment ?

Beer festivals go down very well in Derbyshire.  Something called 'Wobbly Bob' is spoken of with reverence.  On the whole, though, the dour types who live around me stick to their Marstons Pedigree, only occasionally sampling a winter warmer or barley wine.  'Owd Roger' is worth a try.

Re: What are you drinking at the moment ?

I never cared for Marston's Pedigree though it is brewed in the wood and using the Burton union system which is a bit like sherry production.   http://www.marstonspedigree.co.uk/BrewingHistory/pedigreeHistory.aspx

Owd Roger is too strong for me. I had a half of Amber Imperial IPA @6.5% before I headed home.

You certainly would not want to drive after Owd Roger.  Strictly for putting yourself to sleep in your armchair.

I never fail to marvel - if that is the right word - at our stupidity in the spring and summer of '76.  I was working on a building site, running up and down ladders.  Six pints at lunchtime and back on the job.  Not much concern about elf and safety then.  One of the guys was on the waccy-baccy in addition.  Do not go anywhere near Derby Assembly Rooms.

I worked on building sites in the summers of the early 1970s. I did have a drink or two at lunchtime - but never 6 pints.

I remember hard hats were only worn when it rained. People would ride hoists meant to take materials not men. They would also stand close to hoists carrying steel fixers' rods. One slippage and you could be impaled. I also remember using pneumatic drills without goggles or ear defenders.

We were once briefly enamoured of some nun's piss called 'Rolling Rock'.

Tuborg lager from 'Home Bargains' at 69 pence a bottle goes well with curries or pizza.

I am not drinking it at the moment (technically a thread violation) but I picked up some Ardbeg Alligator today.  May have some a little later.

I like meeting Americans.  They tend to be more sincere and less chippy than the English.  I also like meeting Australians for the same reason.  Like the old boy in Rome who was just straightforwardly hacked off with Europe and wanted to go home.

Re: What are you drinking at the moment ?

I'm drinking Darjeeling tea at the moment: Ambootia First Flush. I'm quite a popular customer at the local tea shop run by an Afghanistan political refugee, his Georgian wife and kids. Beyond saving is his verdict of Afghanistan and I'm sure selling tea leaves in the Hague is a better option than fighting off the suicide bombers and Pushtun tribes.

Still, he better not count on my custom indefinitely, three months of sobriety is enough for anyone, especially me.

I've got some Assam in my tea armoury too: Mokalbari's Red. I will be having that at breakfast with toast and English marmalade in preparation for the rigors of the day ahead.

Forty notes for tea reminds me of the ice cream and flake five pound rip-off that people use to talk about after visiting the big Smoke in the early '80's.

I had Guinness Foreign Extra with haddock at tea time.  Trying to lose a bit of weight.
