Re: Ivy League style for today

I think that was Leer R on that one.

Truth is, if you wanna learn about how to put together interesting outfits, just learn some colour theory, cause it'll help, it's not a substitute for style or taste, but it's something that should be of interest to anyone who wants to further things and move away from creative cul-de-sacs they may be in. There is really no mystery with this stuff. But people like Andy who were ignorant to it, always down played it, fact is musicians study rhythm, harmony and melody, artists study composition and colour. Don't think Matisse, Picasso or any of those guys weren't knee deep in colour theory, just like Miles and Trane were in musical. The idea of people being naturals is over played, you got to learn and apply. The rules of colour are science, it isn't subjective stuff. How you put it together might be. Maybe I will write that book, cause it is so true. Now when I have a colour I have to work with I'll be (in my head) right it's a blue, so contrast is orange, then I could add green or violet, bam, there you go job done, or I could go dissonant so blue, red, green yellow. You've got the theory, but then your eye to guide you. No amount of theory alone will make something sound or look good. But, what it will do is help you create new methods if you've got the eye to assist you. When you learn about methods of combining colour it gives you the ability to make decisions you otherwise might not be able to grasp, and you'll release, it need not be blind fluke all the time, I mean look at RL, forget the clothes, but are there many clothing companies out there that can choose and combine colours so well? No, people try like Hackett and Gant, but they fail, it's knowledge and talent, and you can work on both.

And breathe.... I don't want to be some Evangelical to the cause, but it's true, you just gotta learn and apply. Don't listen to those people that dismiss it, if Miles dismissed the theory he learned, we wouldn't have Kind of Blue. Same goes here, for everyone. Picking colours is a lot easier than playing the trumpet. You have to just understand the relationships between them.

Re: Ivy League style for today

Yesterday

Natural white Everest crewneck shetland sweater (size 38)
Discreet gold neck chain tucked under jumper
Rayban Caravans - 55 mm lenses
Light khaki g10 strap on a Prs-10 wristwatch
Slim, deadstock USA made Levis 501 dark blue shrink to fit with hems turned up
Cream, thick ribbed  Wigwam crew/sports socks
WW2 Impressions suede  USMC Boondocker boots

^ I think Rayban Caravans with the larger, 58mm lenses may have been preferable with the above:

I wore the 55 mm lens Caravans with the same trousers, and a  navy Everest jumper and suede rust coloured Minnetonka Trampers, recently. I think it`s a question of horses for courses, but i think the 55mmm lenses were the right choice for this earlier outfit.

The natural white Everest jumper is a very understated, un-projective colour. When you combine it with the statement `boondocker` boots, i think that the eyewear could even be enhanced with being  more of a stronger , counterpoint statement in it`s own right: a bit more `rockn n roll`, for want of a better term(!).

Today

Dyed Black (NOT natural black/dark brown) Everest jumper
Thin, ribbed  Hanes cotton vest underneath (for subtle , complementary aesthetic `padding`, and because there was a chill this morning)
Discreet gold neck chain and dog tag-ish gold pendant tucked under jumper
Persol 714 52mm 24/31 (dark tortoise with grey/green lenses)
Prs 10 wristwatch on  Olive Khaki g10 strap
Uniqlo low rise, summer-weight , chalkish off-white chinos: very tapered and short... (all the better to show off footwear)
Cream, thick ribbed Wigwm crew socks
WW2 Impressions USMC boondocker boots

Re: Ivy League style for today

It's a nice shirt - looks a lot like my cursive script Bean that I believe to date from the 70s. Mine has a similar deep flap chest pocket like yours, but with a pen slot. Nice bit of investigation on the blog too, Ox.

You've started to co-ordinate with your surroundings Ox, like an Ivy chameleon!

Big fan of the shirt, but would still like to see those chinos tapered off, but that's a personal thing, might not work for you.
