Re: Ivy League style for today

I'm not only with Yuca on all of the above, but, more, I despise anything that the media shoves at me with the intention of making me have 'a good time'.  Appeals to patriotism also fall on deaf ears.  Rebecca Adlington, however, is a relatively local lass and I have to admit to fancying the arse off her.  In the end, I simply don't like flag-waving - for any reason, be it Girls Ball games or queenie (as my old Dad was wont to call her).  Smacks too much of Johnny Bull, the BNP, EDL, Churchill, peurile nationalism etc.

Dow Chemicals took over Union Carbide in 1999 and have no responsibility for Bhopal. You can't hold that against them.

I don't see anything inherently evil or oppressive in Coca Cola, other than refined sugar. I even tried the trick of leaving an old penny in a glass of coke over night once to see if it would come out all sparkling and brand new. And no it doesn't.

They did actually settle with the Indian government and this included immunity from prosecution for the executives.

Re: Ivy League style for today

What struck me is how easy it is to strike up a bit of nationalism, getting behind a flag because of the success of others. The idea that self-worth can be attained as easily as waving a flag though might really not be any different than buying some clothes to feel better about yourself.

Nationalism, when it is about standing-up for freedom and cultural values against tyranny and oppression is okay in my books. The nationalism in WWII, for example, was good on the Allies cause which was just. The nationalism in WWI is debatable.

Anyway, that's enough of a detour, we should get back on track!

I'd like to see tom with a grade 4 all over, not just his head. That outfit is kind of dandy, mod, and a touch of the igent. But unlike most attempts you see at it, i think tom has got all the colours and pattern perfect. Better than anything i've seen on style forum.

Bop, you are a one... I was totally sober - I did manage to sneak into the main area for a cheeky Heineken - a real Ice Cold in Alex moment after hours sat on the training track with nothing but nuke proof sandwiches and tepid water! Got a second bottle about 1:30am at the Mother bar in Shoreditch afterwards.

liam - I'll take your word re Spice Girls - I might check it out on YouseTube - if its there. A lot of these things like Petshop Boys /Spice Girls was/are a very UK thing - with different resonances. Not that we hadn't heard of them - but say here Petshop Boys was very very niche and few woudl know about them.

and liam - I'll still respect you and think you're cool - no really

To be frank, I don't much like seeing images of even black athletes wrapped in the flag.

Re: Ivy League style for today

So to continue on the political tip, but what i find silly in this country is when you wave the flag you are celebrating the fact you are a subject, we have no one document containing a constitution, i can maybe understand why an american can get all gushy eye'd about personal freedoms, but what does our flag truly reflect?

Re: Ivy League style for today

Mm.  Interesting.  Our constitution is written but uncodified - as I used to have to point out to my sixth form students.  I don't care much for the Stars and Stripes if it comes to that, nor the French tricolour.  That St. George horror is the ultimate, though, flapping out of windows at the merest provocation: almost always by lager-swilling louts who tolerate black lads because they're a bit tasty but don't much like Pakis.

Re: Ivy League style for today

Anyway, like i said why don't we have a thread about all this, because people obviouly like to talk about it, and it would keep other threads clear of it.

Maybe this is similar to what Talk Idle is thinking about:

"To criticize one's country is to do it a service....Criticism, in short, is more than a right; it is an act of patriotism-a higher form of patriotism, I believe, than the familiar rituals and national adulation."
