The thing I love about the Pendelton board shirt is it has been an integral part of every look on the west coast for a long long time.

Obviously the North Cal loggers wore them as workwear. The counter culturalists in San Fran (Hunter Thompson, in FALILV mentions spilling LSD down the sleeve of his in the Filmore), the So Cal surfies and skaters donned them and they became hip when that west coast look broke. They would have been worn as casual campus wear too... perhaps in the wake of  the west coast look. The black and spanish kids wore them too and they became gang uniform. In fact they still are. They are fetishized by Chola/Cholo's with different colours and checks denoting ranks and affiliations in the gang community. Not too mention average joe would have had one for yard work!

The Pendelton board shirt I think is an absolutely vital part of that great American look and it's cultural significance is something someone more knowledgeable than me could look into and write  a real nice thread on.

Nice Liam, too warm in the smoke for that kinda gear yet.
