The Coexistence Bagel Shop

The Co-Existence Bagel Shop, noted for its bargain breakfasts, was a social center for the North Beach Beats until it closed in 1960. Jack Kerouac mentions the place in his novel, Desolation Angels. Rod McKuen wrote a song entitled "Co-Existence Bagel Shop Blues." Poet Bob Kaufman immortalized the place in his poem "Bagel Shop Jazz" describing its customers as "shadow people . . . mulberry-eyed girls in black stockings, smelling vaguely of mint jelly . . . turtle neck angel guys . . . coffee-faced ivy leaguers . . . whose Harvard was a Fillmore District step."

Yeah,  looks like a good place to be. Probably full of hipster scum then as it would be now.... but until you got sick of their posing I imagine this would be a real cool place to sit and pose.

Cheers for the link Bopster.

Jim looked good with the blonde highlights.

No, North Beach hasn't been overrun by the modern hipsters. Avoid the Mission or SOMA areas if you want to avoid this form of pestilence.

Given its charm, views, and relatively decent weather (for SF), it's a pricey 'hood. The old time Italians are gone; their children have moved on to other neighborhoods or out of the city. Chinatown has expanded north of Broadway into North Beach a bit.

Nonetheless, there's still quite a bit of "old" SF to be found in North Beach.

^The same with any scene, once its gone, its moved on for good and no amount of nostalgia will rekindle the old flame.

Anybody else notice that Ginsberg was this thin handsome looking intellectual dude and then all of a sudden he was half bald, fat and with that terrible beard?

Edit: which reminds me, my father hated my interest in the Beats and when Ginsberg died of cancer, he said it was related to the drugs he took in his youth. What a baffoon.

I really just meant that these cool places always attract a good crowd initially then you get the hangers on and then the real posers move in, who just rot the whole vibe. I don't know SF at all, so couldn't make comment on anything specific.

Andy, I do know what you mean about Ginsberg.

There doesn't seem to be any photographic representation of his drift into fat, bald and beardy oafishness. It seemed like an overnight thing. Some photo's do exist though of half way fucked Ginsberg.

I like how in many similar pics from this same period you have really scruffy looking beat soon-to-be hippie types mingling with purveyors of a nice clean look.

Ginsberg just foreshadowed what happened to everyone by the seventies.

Yeah, even Don Draper's 'one face of acting' couldn't ruin it!
