Dreadful Spanish plonk for which my dear sister paid about £20 a bottle. She got ripped off big time and I am thinking about how to tell her tactfully without upsetting her. Any serious suggestions would very welcome.

Three pints of excellent Adnams Explorer at one of the better Wetherspoons in the Royal Borough.

I don't like Broadside or the Adnams bitter. Most of their stuff is not very good outside Southwold. I used to love Adnams Extra which won Champion beer of Britain and which Adnams then decided to stop brewing for some reason. 'Go figure' as the Americans say.

Sinusitis kicking in and no lemon for a hot toddy, so are trying to kill it with raw Olbas oil and Laphroiag. A bottle of Amyl Nitrate would probably do the trick too.

^ Amyl Nitrate! Yeah, for a few good laughs to forget the sinusitis but the aftermath will be a killer.
Laphroaig, as you know was the only alcohol allowed during prohibition as a common cold remedy.

But today is a Glenfarclas 40 for me. A bargain, for what it is.

I'm not such a big fan of really ancient whisky, but you can get decent Glen Grants 35+ years plus reasonably priced.

Glenfiddich's 30 year old is tremendous and not cheap, on the blend front Ballantine's 21 and 30 year old are hard to beat for their rich luxuriousness.

Tea for me now.

Re: What are you drinking at the moment ?

^ First of all Hepcat, thanks for making my life better with your suggestions on everything from music to beer, cheese, whisky, etc.
As a small gift to you, try this, it's called Hidden Charms, you can get the recipe at http://postprohibition.com/recipes/hidden-charms/

The other day I took my son who was visiting from California for after dinner cocktails at the club. Josh (the bartender) asked my son what liquor he liked and my son being a wiseass told him Laphroaig, surely to stump him. Josh didn't bat an eyelash and said, funny you should ask, I just came up with something using Laphroaig.
Here's the recipe:
1 3/4 oz blended scotch whisky (here Josh used Ballantine's 12 y.o., not the 17 yo)
1/2 oz Carpano Antica Sweet Vermouth
1/2 oz Aperol
1/4 oz Nux Walnut Liqueur
1/4 oz of Laphroaig 10 yr
2 dashes of Amargo Chuncho Bitters
Garnish with a lemon twist

It was nothing short of spectacular. So naturally I had to check the website. That is my second gift to you smile
Happy New Year Hep, you have improved my life, and how many people can say that?

Re: What are you drinking at the moment ?

The local wine come beer merchant was selling-off all the winter ales at knock down prices, so stocked-up with a couple of dozen to sample now and as they're all a wopping strength, they will be maturing quite nicely christmas next year.  Of the samples last night, the Vicaris Winter 2012 was the best. This is the brewery:

Not bad at all.

Re: What are you drinking at the moment ?

Hello,
I usually drink 3-5 cups of hot tea a day. There are tea bags at both of my jobs so I have a lot to choose from.
it is very good for health..

Re: What are you drinking at the moment ?

Brains SA from Wetherspoon then Adnams Lighthouse from a different Wetherspoon.
Wetherspoons have some specials on food - not on the menu. Midweek I got a mixed grill that was loaded with various meats. Had a sirloin steak today @£5.99  which was tasty rather than something to stave off hunger pangs. I am not sure how they do it. Some of their establishments are fine - well-kept, good service, no scumbag customers. Kings Tun in Kingston is not one of these though.
