Are Minnetonka's some real Ivy thing? I wore them as a kid every year, thought they were a bargain bin suburban thing...no?
I did notice the appalling undershirt (I bet they are the despicable Hanes T)
Also not a lot of Girls about (those boys must be gay) a few also had bad teeth.
Put all these things together Dr Watson and what have we got?
Its elementary they are all Jazz loving, pinko, leftie, commie, J Simon’s wearing English Ivyists.
I bet WM has deliberately omitted the picture of Jim on a skateboard, drunk and exposing himself.
I wouldn't say a "real Ivy thing", but I think they were quite popular with the kids. I'm sure they were seen often on campuses from coast to coast back then. Probably dorm room / hang out in the quad on the weekend / go grab a slice of pie / sit on a bench with my friends type of shoe. I mean, I've got a pair. They've come up on the forum before. I actually posted a pic of mine in the thread.
The white undershirt is a defining element of the period, PERIOD. It's not up for a vote. It's not English Ivy or American Ivy- it is simply what men wore in the period under their shirts. I had a drawer full of undershirts. It was a big deal when we stopped wearing them in the 70's (it was practically the 80's before my mom allowed me to wear blue jeans to school...)
On a total tangent, I'm sure everyone on this site knows about the collapse of the undershirt industry after It Happened One Night..yes?
