Do it Armchaired! You will look great!  I have to say that I am not sure the gold buttons have any connotation in the Midwest where I live. I work downtown and of the men who actually wear a sport coat or a blazer, 99% of the time it is a blue blazer with gold buttons. It is always interesting to hear how it is in other parts of the country and in other countries. Do report on your event.
