The combo looks pretty good!

I also like a plain shirt/tartan tie combination with tweedier jackets.

I agree.  That combo looks good.  You could always just go with a white shirt too.  I shy away from my white shirts, as I feel they may be too boring, but then whenever I wear them with a coat and tie, I'm usually pleased with the result.  Nice find for sure, FXH.

1980s Sears and Roebuck short sleeve blue stripe seesucker, hand tailored cinos with a J Press cloth and D-ring belt, complemented by hand finished loafers with a strap across them (due to my spinal illness).   Just the look to be above the polo-shirts on the try hards.
