Compared to Northampton made shoes / boots they are definitely more rugged. They feature unlined leather but the leather quality always is very good - rugged, but nice. Ages well and has a good "vintage" look, at least with my "Brogue Rangers":

Those were comfortable after wearing three times I guess.
I have Round toe woking boots with the white Vibram sole, too. Those are very comfortable, from the first day on. Soles are Vibram, or the sole you can see at my Rangers (very durable but not anti-slipping). In the end you can have the sole changed to any sole you want at some cobbler's, Red Wing stores normally do only their own soles...
