Diners are ubiquitous in all of NYC with the exception of the Bronx. The borough with the strongest diner culture is probably Queens. And that is probably second to Long Island in the area where they are all over the place. On my way out east on Long Island I stop at The Coach Diner in Baldwin. 2 people can get eggs, bacon/sausage/ham, fries/home fries, toast/bagel/muffin, pancakes, juice and coffee for about $10.
I like the atmosphere of diners. I'm not a foodie, so the simple food at a good price is a big attraction. But more than that it is the lack of music, frippery, nauseating descriptions of food and so on that I also enjoy. I know I'm not paying a premium for design. And why should I when it comes to food? People call it an art form. Perhaps it can be, I don't know, but to me it is a consumable. There's little point in designing when it comes to food. Makes as much sense to me as designing gasoline and the pumps that provide it. I'm not willing to pay a premium for soft music, lighting, non-functional design, or fancy descriptions (this gasoline was refined at an organic refinery in the Hudson Valley from oil tenderly drawn from a well in the rolling hills of western Pennsylvania) there, and I have to be dragged to do it with food. But I am dragged often enough. Such is the biological urge for something else other than food.
In my neighborhood, within 5 blocks of me there are 5 diners that I know of. I only go to one. And depending on those whom I encounter I dare not express my preferred diner. Advocates of one or another can sometimes lose perspective over the importance of the argument.
In yesterdays Time Out Acton, not tried them yet. If you get chance check out SubCult for something delicious and not a burger.
