Well I don't dig sherpa lined denim jackets (sherpa lined wool jackets are a different story) but I also don't get any costume connotations from them. The few times I wore one was always in the 5-15° above freezing range in Canadian spring or late-fall. I suppose if some cat in Arizona or SoCal were wearing one in the middle of the day it'd look pretty dumb. I personally don't like them because they look too 1970's to me, but they're a pretty simple utalitarian clothing item.

A thirty plus year old guy in a varsity jacket looks completely stupid though.
I think it's ok if you are over 30 years old but look under 30. Arnie springs to mind. Some are blessed with infinite youth...or you could go the Coach angle. Look destroyed by coffe and cigarettes and clutch your hair regularly and throw you hat on the ground.
Varsity jackets without the contrast sleeves look ok,
Greenspans do a decent all melton wool example (not the greatest pictures to be honest, but it'll give you an idea)...

^ That's a great deal if the lining's in good shape. There's a couple of low priced MMs on Etsy as well:

I don't see anyone wearing such jackets in the city. Then again, I live in non-Hipster Brooklyn, work in the Financial District, and have a crash pad in Yorkville.
Still, the trucker/rancher connotation to these jackets is high for me, and I suspect most easterners. There is no doubt that I would ridiculous wearing one. Just as ridiculous as a trucker wearing a whale belt.
Yeah, that's right, cos whenever you wear jeans people think you're a cowboy!

Tom Wolfe gives the big clue in his essay "Funky Chic" -- when Ivy pulls Americana into the fold, it's almost always Americana that is from another era. WWII khakis in the 60s, sure, probably even Vietnam-style M-65s by now, but not Iraq War surplus. Chambray and brown ducks (as found in aging Sears catalogs) but not safety-yellow rip-stop trousers with reflective tape on the hems.
