For road running the classic NB 574 (with the original gum sole) is hard to beat, mesh/suede version for the warm weather and in kangaroo leather for wetter months.
The 'barefoot' running thing seems very dubious, looks like a recipe for micro-fractures and tendon damage to me.
Altho' I do admit to having a pair of Vivobarefoot shoes for the gym which are as ugly as hell but work really well as indoor trainers.

I have trashed just about every sneaker brand, and NB is consistently the one that is hardest to destory and is often the most comfortable. I have a heap, but the first pair I bought in 1996, some Chinese 574's are still treaded and providing excellent service for mowing the lawn.
If any of you UK heads are near a place called "Flimby", there is an NB factory there.
I think I'm gonna try out a pair of Paraboots next week... I hope they look a little less Boris Karloffy on my feet as they do in online pics.
