That was a CAFE! Anyone could just walk in and order food/drinks beside a peeing kangaroo!

The deer of Miyajima are thought of as sacred in Shinto religion and the island's become a sanctuary. They're obviously wild and I thinkt eh story goes that a herd somehow managed to swim over from the mainland during low tide something like 100 years ago and because there's no natural predators on the island they flourished and became part of the tourist attraction. They're tame and they're found all over the island. When the tide goes out they head down to the beach and feed on the seaweed and algae. That deer in the picture was banging on the door of an oyster restaurant with it's hoof! We stayed at a ryokan on the island (which is a UNESCO preserve) in the forest along the banks of this ancient river and as soon as we woke up and opened our front door, we were greeted by a family of wild deer lounging in the sunbeams on our front porch. It was very cool! I don't have any photos but I actually lay down with one and my head was resting on it's back; it didn't seem to mind.
