Andy Warhol did it a lot.
I have seen it working well, but I never do. Reminds me of some Austrian politicians in the 90s that wanted to be 'youthful'...
It isn't preppy, it is originally a 70s thing, I guess. Think of Redford in "Three Days of the Condor". He pulled it off very well...

I think of it as a celebrity thing, not for me.
I really don't like it at all.
Its about as appropriate as wearing your underpants on the outside of your trousers.
^ I don't ever do it and don't think I ever did ..... for me jeans are casual, I like them with t-shirts and sneaks .....
So why did he..?
I know you get that ll bean mocs, jeans and blazer look that is iconic americana thats a massive 70s/80s look... I see it as woodsman goes to town
not to seem reactionary ... jeans with an ocbd and a Shetland sweater and loafersor mocs or sneaks or Clarks are the best things ever ... you have your jeans, ocbd and your crewneck sweater
you don't need that tie Loretta
what do you wear as your outerwear with jeans and Shetland sweater? anything you want except for a black leather blazer.

I'd guess no tie, but we'll never know.
I'm gonna vote no on the tie and jeans. I'm always willing to be swayed in light of extraordinary evidence, however.
Can't do it.
No, not ever, never, ever.
We should not be encouraging anyone to follow in the footsteps of Billy Joel, Hepcat.
Katon i would love to see you post these 70s/80s Brooks catalogs over here.
That would put all these heretical notions to bed.

Cough. I must confess I sometimes do it. Generally a cord sack, button down, knit tie, Levis and cola desert boots. In my mind it has an art school vibe. Though admittedly I was never at art school
Yeah, I'm thinking with a knit tie it could work, or with black jeans that plastic exploding inevitable vibe from '65.
