Yeah I find I don't pick up the "novels" much these days but have a soft spot for Mexico City Blues.
The Carolyn Cassady book "Off the Road" is great if you haven't read it - that's like the flip side of On the Road if you like.
And the Gerald Nicosia "Memory Babe" biography of Kerouac is the best I've read - that really nails the development of the whole beat thing and explains best what happened to him really in the context of those times.
