Go vintage, ebay and etsy are your friend on this one and you won't have to spend a fortune.
Once you've found a vintage style that works hunt down a similar modern one or get a copy made ( a much easier garment to get copied than a suit or trousers ).
That is car coat territory. Far better full length and three quarter length stuff on eBay
OK let me start my hunt on ebay - thanks chaps
^ exactly, but a raglan sleeve is also an option.
Yeah, in hindsight I'd probably have preferred a raglan sleeve in a slightly heavier tweed. Mustn't grumble, though, it's a good find and am pleased.
Yeah that sort of thing - length for me is a potential issue too - I don't like anything that makes me look like one of those leather coated Sci-fi enthusiasts with pony tails.
Magee of course have a few options if you just want to buy something now:

I have a herringbone overcoat that I got last year but have hardly ever worn it- ended up being a little small on me. Guess I should drag that out again and put it up for sale.
O'Connell's and Press (predictably) both do some tremendous looking topcoats (or they did - I haven't checked recently) however they don't come cheap. In fact they cost an arm and a leg. Possibly well worth it, but there are plenty of gems from back in the day knocking around at a fraction of the cost.
Not herringbone, but 2 or 3 years ago I got an amazing 60s black wool (and possibly cashmere) topcoat courtesy of a WM tip off. It was a size too big on the body but the shoulders and sleeves were ok so my tailor was able to alter it to perfection. (I'll have to get a photo up soon.) Such things are really worth their weight in gold.
With overcoats vintage really is the way to go. Especially in my climate, it's hard to rationalize dropping a grand on a quality overcoat. I see nice hbones all the time for less than $100 USD.
John Simons have a size 39R Rogers Peet Scotch Mist coat for sale in grey herringbone absolutely perfect condition.

I like this a lot.
Hehe! Shit you're right!
Is it too Anglo?
I found a NOS burgundy wool and black flecked raglan sleeved overcoat with it's original 1958 price tag still stapled on the sleeve. I think it's a Botany 500 but I'm too lazy to check. It needs some alterations but I think I paid around $50 for a mint new to '58 overcoat and it's one of my favorites!

I remember. A real beauty.
