SMF is just taking the piss, playing devil's advocate and all that. Funny stuff.
Whoa! I actually have that red and black tartan Car-Sac garment bag!
Just been scrolling through the last few ages and now I'm feeilng pretty inspired.
Many, many thanks AC, it's so good of you to share all of those images.
I just abide by the cliche that you take the good with the bad. For instance, without all the inequality and adversity that existed we wouldn't have been blessed with so much great art and music that we can now enjoy. I really can't stand it when people level that logic or criticize my taste by saying, "but that was such a messed up time." That's just missing the point. I should be able to like the lines on a mid-century chair or drool over these clothes in these ads AC's posting without feeling guilty... and I do. Not to mention, it's not like everyone on Earth subscribed to doctrines of intolerance and hatred during a specific era. Not saying I overlook these dark moments in history either. But in my mind the enjoyment of material goods and art and music can exist outside of wallowing in the negativity that may have surrounded it.
That's part of it - it's also true to say that the negativity still exists and in some ways has got considerably worse.
Oh, yeah. And so has the art and the music and the clothes!
As i trawl through these vintage magazines i have come across some cartoons in particular that have made my jaw drop.
Different time amd place and all we can say is, it wasnt right but they were people of their times.
Lets not be too hard of them as they were our granddaddies after all.
The 40s were a pretty rotten decade for white men too as WWII wasnt exactley a barrel of laughs.
I think there is no point in denying that society was then openly dominated by the White Christian Heterosexual Male of Money and Self intrest. Its fact. There was much wrong with society of the time.
However it was also a period where there was much positive change. Civil rights movements for all races, religions, genders and sexualitys. A lot of positive change happened during this period.
The clothes, at least mostly those we're interested in crossed the boundaries of race, how often do you see a great shot of a jazz musician of any background in a great outfit?
I'm up for celebrating the positives of this era, no one on here is advocating a return to some of the questionable morals of some of society during this period.
What this country needs is a good $42-47 suit.
That's $716.45 to $801.74 today. Make of that what you will.
This stuff is so good it's hurting my head.
Really handy resource for eBay searches. Lots of names here that are new to me.
