Woof, not sure how long they have been using the number system. Here is a short post that I wrote a while back that features 1-5: http://oxfordclothbuttondown.com/2013/05/the-brooks-brother-striped-tie/
I feel l am about to set the buzzer off on Q.I., but I always thought the "#" symbol is just shorthand for the word "number"?
**Loud Buzzer Noise!!***
^ Even more down the QI route ...
"#" symbol traditionally used to designate part numbers on engineering drawings to avoid confusion with measurement markings.
It derives from the abbreviation for Libro Pondo, 'pound weight' in Latin, i.e. an LP scored through to denote an abbreviation. This was simplified to the # as time went on, and originally it referred to weight in pounds. It cam to refer just to 'number' in accounting practice in the US in the 19th C.
I cant work out if this thread just got more..or less interesting?
This is octothorpe !

Do you mean Trunk?
How many Repp no's were there? I recall 1 and 2 but there were others. Not necessarily in sequence. I always thought ol Harris did a swell number when he commissioned the guy who was based here I think, but fled to Thailand at some point to make ties. Sam Hober, I think?
