Oli, thanks for the blast from the past. Zim's was a favorite. I recall the old location on 19th and Taraval. You might know about Hippo's on Van Ness. (It's too bad the owners of the Alexandria have let the property fall into disrepair.
Yep, I think that bottom pic is from the Sunset location on Taraval.
I heard that a new buyer took over The Alexandria not too long ago. There's been a resurgence of vintage theaters in the Bay Area lately, with the Alamo Drafthouse moving into the New Mission and the renovation of The Roxy. A friend of mine just started programing regular nights for The Clay and Balboa too. We're pretty blessed compared to the rest of the country. You're lucky to find any rep cinema at all in most states outside of California.
I read about Hippo in a semi-recent Eater article titled "Hamburgers and Hookers", or something along those lines, ha. Did you ever make it to Grison's on Van Ness in the current Harris' location?
It would have been years ago since I went to Grison's. I did visit Westlake Joe's on my last trip to town.
An old high school buddy used to be the projectionist at The Balboa and a few other places around town. Too bad The Red Vic isn't around any more.
The food was quite decent. Portions are good. Prices are not as high as Original Joe's in North Beach. The Duggan family did a great job reviving the place. I don't think it suffers from the hangover of the last days of the Scatena family's ownership. We had to check it out for precisely that reason. Caveat: the place is slammed, leading to some inconsistency.
I love the chicken pie shop in fresno!
Yep, they're great.

I'm on my way to Dulles to catch the next plane...
^ you gents are really cruel, nowhere does good fried clams near me.
Will have to make do with a Sub Cult scallop special...

You're gonna make me cry. I love the Clam Box and I miss the abundance of REAL seafood shacks back East where you have wide coastal plains threaded with estuaries and small family run fish shacks up and down the coast. Most fish in California comes from the airport because there are relatively few places to launch a boat and most of the local fishing is deep water. I went to Barbara's Fish Trap in Capistrano last weekend after spending Memorial Day in Half Moon Bay, and next to the local oyster farms around Tomales Bay, it's probably the closest thing we have to those kind of places in MA and ME where you've got a guy with a boat docked on tidal rivers who goes out for a couple of hours and comes back with fresh line catch. There's really no local seafood industry in California. Dungeness season is relatively short and then a lot of it gets flown in from Washington.
/\ well the scallops extravaganza didn't occur but I did go to a nice fish market and made inquiries, currently there are beautiful diver scallops and this weekend I'm told there will be tiny sweet bay scallops, which I'm crazy for ......
so thanks McDerms for putting the scallops idea into my head
I still had a very nice turkey, Swiss, cole slaw on rye with Russian dressing and a Cel-Ray tonic for lunch and I'm going downstairs to the cucina now for an Italian sausage and peppers sandwich with some marinara on a toasted sub roll with pecorino cheese
