I have half a day free in Bucarest next week.
What do I do and see?
Was there this time last year for a Festival, got to spend three days exploring.
Not much clothing and footwear wise that you can't get anywhere else, so some food and drink recommendations...
Caru' cu Bere ( literally translated 'The Beer Cart') , 5 strada Stavrpoleos,
great local food ('tochitura' a seasonal pork stew is absolutely dynamite if it's on the menu) and beer. Good lunchtime stop.
Bordello Bar , 9 strada Selari,
Evening /Late stop is a Cabaret, burlesque and music bar, good tapas style eats and the booze flows freely:)
Cremeria Emilia, 38 strada Franceza,
The best coffee and cakes/deserts I've eaten in Romania, they do a beautiful 'panna cota' and gelato style ice cream.
No worries CB.
One I forgot ....
The Sky Bar at the Pura Vida Hostel, 7 strada Smardan,
outdoor roof top bar, a little bit ramshackle and home made but all the better for it.
The traditional shoemakers in the wonderful cobbled lanes of the Old Town, near the Presidential Palace, make excellent and inexpensive footwear.
Err, no, hold on - that's not Bucharest.... I'm thinking of somewhere else. Sorry.
Actually, I was going to go to Bucharest the other year, but I decided to remain yer. Geddit?
there's a old memoir/notebok - I've been meaning to pick it up -- mentioned a month or so ago in NYRB:

centered on Bucharest. I've been meaning to pick it up.
This too:

I like reading older books of great cities (or great provincial cities) in a different time and then traveling there, to see if I can sense the ghosts. Or run into Vaclav.
Funny you say that... I just finished Michael Palin's tie-in book for his TV show Around the World in 80 days. Not that old and strictly a book for bathroom sojourns...But there's still enough of the old world flavours described in his "postcards" to fire your own imagination. I couldn't think of anything worse than reading about e-tickets and tripAdvisor...
Those books you linked to, thank you. Fascinating. Will put them on the list.

Nice one Chief. Hope you did the sensible thing and avoided the Irish Bar! The horror...
I did indeed.
But I must admit to being fond of the Irish bar in Nice, Ma Nolans...
