ha ha. Thanks. I'll carry that mental image around for a while.
Chipper, great info. I wouldn't be surprised if Jackie had a hand in his style education... But I have to say I prefer JFK's style to Aristotle Onassis' any day...
I think the obvious point here is the fit of one's trunks is personal preference. John's preference certainly would not be mine. That looks like it might even hurt.

I can't see everything there, but I'm guessing part of the answer lies in your statement: effortlessness. Getting rumpled and not caring, wearing a comfortable shirt, knotting a tie and forgetting it, having an interest in the world you live in (see the ish of Time) all the while maintaining a knowing smile and an eye on the horizon, on the destination and knowing it is about much more than what you're wearing.

^It was of course segregated back then and the black population were limited to the areas they could live in being around 7th avenue. This created a mixture of classes together, but once the restrictions on property ended, the middle class moved out into the palm tree lined suburbs and the slow descent into Watts and what those ghettoes are today began.
John was always such a dork, wasn't he? Until Yoko and the long hair anyway... I love Paul here especially
Love the sweater in that first pic, very cool breast pocket action...
I posted that link on FB, it's a great bit of footage, utter class.
Back when smoking was extremely cool!
From the same film with some more cool smoking, this time of cigars:
