Brando was good in Last Tango and Apocalypse. But in general... I'm not sure decayed is accurate. Maybe more like morphed into a bloated blob?
As for Dean, I don't understand how a terrible car accident is self-destructive.

Because he was driving a Porsche to a race to break it in - was stopped for speeding once on the way and was driving 85mph at the time of the accident... The most in-depth analysis I've seen says 75mph at moment of impact compared to around 55 for the Ford... The other car was also going fast for the speed limit but Dean was driving very fast especially after being ticketed once... the reason they were on that road to begin with was to avoid a 25mph downtown area, they wanted to go fast... He was known as a speed guy... Who knows what would have happened if he'd been going slower or had gone through downtown and followed the limit there instead of going on the "racer's road"... Very sad obviously even if he was at fault or partly at fault...

Well, I'd call that more just poor judgement, maybe impulsiveness. It's not really the long spiraling down that "self-destruction" suggests. It's actually rather exuberant, to my view, like a kid who wants to see how fast he can go on his bike. That is, I don't see it as willfully self-destructive.

Tomato, tomahto... The point is, they all were f***ed up
Dean set up his own shoots. Those moody street shots of him in NYC tucked into his overcoat were organised with his pal and fellow photographer.
"Look at me, just a beautiful impoverished artist in the big city. Love me, please"
Very uncool.
I saw Rebel Without a Cause a year or 2 ago - what garbage. Has Dean ever even done a decent movie? He's very photogenic and I'm sure a lot of women find him attractive, but he was supposed to be an actor and his films are (afaik) crap so he doesn't do anything for me. Also he seemed to dress pretty scruffily (although I think he did have a nice tweed sack in Rebel).
Brando dressed better, could act, was a good drummer and a regular at the NY Palladium. He was also an inventor of sorts: http://www.npr.org/2011/07/03/137558144/marlon-brandos-lost-musical-innovation

Imagine an older Dean as Don Corleone - it would have ruined the film.
Speeding and reckless driving is very uncool. Being responsible for severely injuring your passenger is very uncool.
Did I mention I think Dean is uncool?...
But because I am "best big brother ever!" I never shared these views with my little sister.
Well, Paul Newman could pull off speeding pretty well I happen to think Steve McQueen is the same as JD, very posed and all about image, from choosing his own wardrobe and adding the bike chase in Great Escape to pretty much everything else, ever...
But JD was indeed photogenic... and that's all it really takes...
And I'm pretty sure young Marlon Brando wouldn't have been much of a Don Corleone either...
Grady Wilson was cool.
One of my school chums, she was female, modelled her look on Dean. It was the time of Morrissey's Suedehead video. She was buying into the whole myth of Brando as rebel and whatever angst you wanted to project on him. Later she was a big hit with the lesbians at university and they were constantly giving her lots of attention which was wasted on her as she was straight. Last time I heard of her, she was touring the Army bases in Germany as a folk singer. I wonder what happened to her?

Dean was up Brando's arse but Brando didn't care at all for him. He once said about Dean that "he's wearing my last year's clothes and last year's talent"
There's a funny photo of Brando and Dean together with a few other people, and Brando is discreetly giving Dean the middle finger..
