Blimey, I have loads of bags. I find stuff in things in my pocket looks messy and uncomfortable, especially as I have a large bunch of keys. Wallet is only very slim as is phone, but more than that out comes a bag, totes like Ox are ideal for a day aroun town of there is a chance of buying/rain/shopping and not carrying about a plastic bag.
There is a couple of ideas about why this is happening..one being woman can become selfsufficient and therefore men do not attract women by means of being able to support women...but in the same way that woman may have attracted men by beautifying themselves...is that a word?
Also its nothing new.. think of the Regency period...powdered wigs..red cheeks etc... or the New Romantics for a more recent go at it...every now and again dude looks like a lady...and its normally terrible..even my hero Eno didnt really get away with it...imo
I think Ox has two, maybe three, different looks going on in his overall style... He has the (as King rightly says) the true-to-form Ivy look, blazer, striped tie, ocbd, etc... Then of course he has the 70s prep (or 70s prep-inspired) look, Wallabees, boat shoes, sweaters and even a ball cap or two... Then there is the middle ground look... some combination of the two... The bag Ox has may not be "historically accurate" to his Ivy half but may be more to the other half... I guess my point is that Ox always seems to embody Bop's post in that he wears what makes him happy, he has fun with his look in his own way, I don't personally care if a man in 1959 was carrying a bag like that or not, Ox makes it work with his own style... Ultimately that's why we have this thread... it's Ivy League style for today, and not just today = calendar day but also "for our time," the way we interpret Ivy style for ourselves...
Ha... we have been here before!
I personally think a style needs to be about rules and codification... I forget the name of the Japanese term, but to hone a style true to form is the objective is the height of mastering it...and I like that very much and subscribe to it, and always shine a torch for the defenders of that. Trouble is life is a journey of discovery and influences come and go...I keep my really non-ivy stuff off the thread because I feel like this place should be sacred to Ivy... because it is an Ivy forum..saying that I dont think a bag really is anything to worry about..if I started posting me in Surgical appliance freeruns and a tshirt with abstract art on it..and an OCBD then I think we'd be in trouble...but I save that for other places on the forum and if people like it great...otherwise Im just seeing my ideas through..personally I like to keep going and see where new influences take me..but Ivy is like a foundation of whats proven to work and I think is always going to be a bedrock to what I like.
What's my point... er yeah I think tradition is worth saving but innovation is what keeps things turning
The first time I met Jim he told me my bag was ivy.
Beat that losers.
Haha we have, welcome back to "Are Clothes Fun or Not? FNB Finds Out"...
Well yeah obviously it's an Ivy forum so things should fall in there, I agree...
It's worth noting that Ox didn't carry the bag with a blazer and tie, but with madras short sleeves, shorts and boat shoes... It's not quite fair to fault him for not being true Ivy when he was obviously going in that 70s prep/Ivy mix direction with the outfit...
I guess my point was that Ox is definitely Ivy, so him mixing a bit of 70s prep in there doesn't kill it for me, especially since 70s prep is in the family tree, as I'm sure Stan would agree... Just like surf Ivy, it may only have a few Ivy hallmarks but it's still firmly in the family...
Like mixing in some Americana, when it's done right it still lives in Ivy's house...
Anyway, keep doing your thing, Ox... Traffic lights may change and pedestrians may come and go, but Ox remains...
now: old NOS Sero pima lightweight plaid broadcloth green/navy/beige/white long-sleeved bd from O'C's, old faded 501 stfs, faded pewter Vans Era
earlier today in Champion lacrosse shorts and Paragon NY LST, then on to O'Connell's end-on-end, Press poplins, unlined suede Alden penny loafers, then to Incontinence pants shorts, cotton LST, and Neww Balance USA
it's all Americana, even/especially the Ivy, except for the Incontinence pants
and the Brooks Brothers birthday boxer briefs ... they wore like iron when they were made in Canada ... still the best though ....

I appreciate all of the kind words fellas!
I will add that I always carry my bag. Even at work where I am a senior employee. I have to carry a laptop, tablet, and other miscellaneous items. It is basically an "interpretation" of the classic Filson bag.
I also believe in rules and parameters. However, my style is Trad which includes a lot of the Ivy League look, but as Berkeley and Bop noted does include non-Ivy items. I try not post too much of my non-ivy stuff here.

That's a great hat Yuca, just what I'm looking for to replace my deteriorating J Press one. Can't seem to find it on the Miller hats site, what do they call one of them?
Edit: found it thanks, how is the sizing on these?
Highfields - there was a little street party yesterday (just for 2 streets). A DJ, a magician, some superb free vegetarian curry and a bit of African drumming (lead by the guy on timbales).
