I recently purchased a yellow oxford from New England Shirt Co on a very deep discount. It's an outstanding shirt but lacks a back collar button: this is typically a deal-breaker for me, but the discount was generous enough and the quality great enough for me to overlook it.
However, I still wish it had a back collar button... has anyone tried/heard of a back collar button being added by a tailor or via a DIY home job?
Hi Phillip,
My alterations guy does it for £3/shirt, not hand done but done with on a sewing-machine attachment which does buttonholes.
the thing to be careful with is how the how the button is stitched to the back of the collar, needs a neat finish.
It's worth mentioning that the classic Brooks Bros shirt has never had a 3rd button.
But as A-B says relative easy job if done right.

Agree that basically any modern sewing machine can handle this. As Acton notes, the button needs to be done blind so that no annoying bunch of thread is visible or uncomfortably chafing on the inside.
If it is as nice a shirt as you say it is, I wouln't bother altering the shirt's original design and keep it as it is.
