Just saw that second GHWB pic recently, it's great... And I think he does pull it off without too much nerdiness... at least of a bad kind...
So, because GHWB did it, it's fine?
I just think it looks good on GHWB, he did it well, and so if I could do it that way, I would... It's all personal taste though But if the question is, "Is it Ivy," then I'd say GHWB answers the question - he was a definitely Ivy guy.
/\ one more thing, again, who's Dwight?
I have a nice number of great short-sleeved button-down shirts in broadcloth, oxford, end-on-end, and madras, and I wear them all the time, and I have so many more great Ivy ties,
but I've never worn them together, nobody does that today except for possibly some old very codgers, who generally look kind of cool whatever they wear, but it was an old anti-style hot-weather combination that definitely looks funny at best now but was in fact worn by many people from Martin Luther King, Jr. to the Bushes to Southern politicians to Walter Matthau, Lewis Skolnick, and every used-car salesman that ever lived.
never did it myself however even though Brooks Brothers featured illustrations of guys wearing short-sleeved ocbds with repp ties in years of catalogues from the height of preppy ....
I wear short-sleeved madras, short-sleeved polos, and tees, of course. I'd never wear a short-sleeved oxford -- just feels odd. And I'd never wear them with a sport coat or tie, also very odd. In my opinion, of course.
I've seen pics of that shirt before, got-damn... They don't make 'em like they used to...

And that -- I would like to tell all the young dudes -- is how one wears one's shirt untucked.
LOL.
Awful.
Simply put. But then we'll disagree to disagree or whatever, right?
oh yeah, the short-sleeved button-down shirt is awesome and it's bedrock Ivy, that was made clear in WM's epic Tech Ivy thread .....
wearing it with a tie, sport coat on the back of a chair, was something a lot of my Ivy-educated teachers did in the tropical heat before we had air-conditioning in all the classrooms ....
we knew why they were doing it .... they were amazing people and had amazing anti-style. Respect.
Severson in his short-sleeved ocbd over white t-shirt, with trim poplins and canvas deck sneakers, just looks cool anyway you slice it. That look couldn't be more Ivy, no amount of modern caviling is going to change the fact that it was done and it was done a lot by people across the class spectrum.
All bets are off however if the shirt in question doesn't have a button-down collar.
