Hahaha! That's a great story Chip... the fact that he dressed well otherwise makes it way funnier...
He was an odd duck. He ended up getting let go, i.e., fired.
Yeah, ha ha. Classy touch with the pen in the pocket. Gosh, might even be a Bic!
/\ that was the photo that accompanied his obit in the Washington Post .....
To paraphrase what Mick Jagger once said about Margaret Trudeau, I don't want to touch the short-sleeve-with-or-without-tie subject now with a barge pole.

You are absolutely right, Berk. That does make sense, as does the whole reason for wearing short-sleeved shirts, even, dare I say it, with a necktie.
And of course it must be a felt-tip pen! Contemporary choice, of course, and probably preferable for ease of making one's autograph.
I like the choice of tie stripes with the shirt stripes. Somehow coordinated in a kind of easygoing manner. A kind of "on the campaign trail, I need to throw on what I have on the bus" choice. I respect it.
I've completely changed my mind on this matter.

It was also able to be purchased in UK on new hire purchase arrangement in UK from late 50s, so was very accessible and had been seen as cool Italian item in films.
